Reading Food Labels: Living With Food Allergies

Reading food labels is one of your first lines of defense when feeding people with food allergies. However, some may call it a red herring. Before you pick up the label, there are a few things you should ALWAYS remember that food companies are NOT required to add to the label:

  • If the food was made on shared equipment with major allergens
  • If the food was made in a shared facility with major allergens
  • Give you details about the raw materials that went into the final product
  • Let you know if there are processing aides used during the manufacturing
  • And the list goes on…

Unless you’re picking up a product from a very trusted company, you should not assume that the label is telling you everything you need to know. Let’s take a deeper look…
