Coconut, Legumes, Peanuts, Tree Nuts, and Tiger Nuts

In the food allergy world, we hear about peanut and tree nut allergies so often, especially in children. These allergies have been highlighted in the news in recent years due to the unfortunate food allergy related deaths of several children. We hear about nut free schools, peanut free planes, and so much more. Now, let’s clear up the confusion. Let’s start with tree nuts. Tree nuts are just that: nuts that grow on trees. Officially, these include: almond, brazil nut, cashew, chestnut, hazelnut, macadamia nut, pine nut, pistachio, and walnut. They can be found in a lot of products such as cereal, cookies, and ice cream. It is possible to allergic to only one of these items, and not the rest. It’s also possible to be allergic to all tree nuts. No two people are the same, which is why some people will say “I’m allergic to almonds” where others will say “I’m allergic to tree nuts”.
